Notice for anyone attempting to use Firewire (IEEE 1394 connection) [Jan. 4th, 2009|11:24 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]

For Christmas, I bought mannlich and I a camcorder to replace our broken JVC one. I upgraded my computer to match, and bought a Firewire card for my new motherboard since it didn't come with one.
Being on a bit of a cash crunch (holiday overspending, yes) I bought the first, cheapest firewire card I saw. Big mistake.

After surfing the web for 3 days trying to understand why the camera could be controlled by the Firewire connection, but could NOT download the video to the computer, I stumbled upon a forum that identified the FIREWIRE CHIPSET as the problem. NEC and (maybe) VIA chipsets often to do not work! These chipsets are often installed on the lower end firewire cards, and may not be 100% compatible. Especially with JVC camcorders. Apparently (our new) Samsung too. In contrast, the more expensive ($50+up) firewire cards often come with the TI chipset, which was one of the first developers of the IEEE 1394 standard, and WILL download video from the camcorder.

Hope I saved one of you from the headache I went through! (I returned the camcorder today before discovering this, because i only had 14 days to return it. :( Could buy it again, but likely will pay off some bills first. Ah well.)

Not sure who to vote for? [Oct. 13th, 2008|10:58 pm]
Try this quiz!

(CTV also has one, but I found its questions rather biased - they didnt tackle issues I thought were important, but bothered to ask if pot should be legalized.)

Hello World! [Jul. 23rd, 2008|09:11 pm]
Wow, I feel so ungeeky. I did not know how to write "Hello World" in so many languages.
At best, I can do it in C, C++, Basic, Pascal, Visual Basic, Java, and HTML (if that counts).

How many computer languages do YOU know?!

Uh huh, stupid marketing. [Jul. 5th, 2008|10:38 am]
From http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSN2631304820080703

But does the average Joe really need such souped-up chips?

"It's an interesting question," said Tim Bajarin, a long-time technology analyst and consultant with Creative Strategies. "If the basic issue is productivity like Web browsing, word processing and e-mail, you don't need all that much. A dual-core processor is good enough."

*COUGH* *cough* *LAUGH*

Umm, I need a dual-core to check my email and use MS Word? I don't think so Tim. There are thousands of people still running horrible windows ME that are able to check their email, and I can guarantee they aren't running a dual-core processor. More like an old Pentium I or II.

Gotta love how industry keeps bumping up the minimum even though its unnecessary....

[If you were to look into my eyes, you'd see that I am | pissed off]

So Casa Loma lied to us about the Swords, Archery and Knighting event being for adults too. Instead we got a curt "If you wanna dress up in midieval clothing, thats what our ren faire is for". And all they offered us instead was $45/hr EACH archery lessons, so they can kiss my ass. I dont need to see their shitty ass castle - I've already seen the ones in Germany, and Dundurn castle in hamilton.

(Yes, I did tell them its $1,000 for the two of us to fly to TO for a weekend, but they didnt seem to care. Assholes.)

So now I need something new to check out in Toronto, anyone got any ideas?

Basic Community Services should NOT be privatized. [Mar. 19th, 2008|10:56 pm]
So maybe I'm out of the loop, but I just learned today that Katz wants to privatize the city's libraries and community centres. As I use both regularly, and feel children (and adults) need safe, inexpensive places to learn and play, this infuriates me.

A rally is being scheduled for March 26 at (i believe) 8:30 am - if you can, find out more info and go tell Katz to stop wasting money on replacing perfectly good bus signs, and start supporting the services that make our kids grow up into human beings.

A bridge has fallen.....circlets of iron ring home again... [Aug. 1st, 2007|10:37 pm]
http://www.mail.com/NewsArticle.aspx?catId=0&articleId=1158877&page=1&newssiteid=1

A bridge in Minnesota has collapsed. Not on the one to our ren faire, but nearby, near Minneapolis. People died, and it of course makes all engineers reflect on our profession and the iron ring that binds us to design things to prevent just such things from happening. I do not wear my ring religiously; I do not need it physically on my finger to feel its burn.

To those people who have died, I feel for you and am sorry. They say it was not an act of terrorism, which means we must be ever vigilant.

I will be watching the papers for the reason for the cause. The article hints that it may be the aesthetics of the bridge that are behind it failing, but we shall see. Engineers will investigate, I am sure.

Pony Corral (Downtown) can kiss my ass! :@ [Jul. 30th, 2007|05:40 pm]
[If you were to look into my eyes, you'd see that I am | pissed off]

Checked my MC yesterday...there was an extra $54 charge on my mastercard, on top of the $52 Id spent on my birthday dinner (and for jay as well).

K, accidents happen, but i emailed my sis to see if maybe theyd scanned my card twice and just missed hers....only to have her respond that SHES FILING A COMPLAINT AGAINST THEM, because apparently they added a $6 tip to her $10 meal! She paid MC but left a cash tip on the table, so she's pissed as well.

Ive got my money back after contacting head office, but if i hadnt checked - they wouldve made a nice sum off of me! Bastards. So if you go there - check your statements VERY carefully after!!!

Oh, and in case anyones thnking it was busy or soemthing: it was a thursday night around 7:30 pm, and the restaurant was dead. We had two ditzes of server girls waiting on us, and they couldnt remember to ask us what type of potato we wanted with our meal, never mind recall how much a damn drink cost.

Kitty-Saver Needed! [Jun. 15th, 2007|01:48 pm]
Posted for my sister...the girl who wrote this email is a friend of hers....

Hi all,

I have 10 days to find a home for a honourary Canadian kitty. Her name is Allie, she's siamese. Her mom and dad are leaving for the U.S. in 10 days. They are US military and their term here is over and they'll be returning home. Their cat Allie was injured a month or so ago in a fight under their deck with an unknown creature and received a tail pull injury.

In case you're not familiar, a tail pull injury can result in varying degrees of damage to the nerves affecting tail carriage, hindlimb usage and bladder/bowel/sphincter control. Severing the nerves results in permanent damage and stretching of the nerves may require months to heal and the cat may have partial or complete use of tail, hindlimbs etc....

In Allie's case, she lost her ability to control her tail, had no bladder control and no sphincter control. In the time I was providing home care for her, she needed her bladder expressed and she had no control over where she had a bowel moment. She was unsteady on her hind legs, had no appetite and was not drinking on her own. She was being force fed and given SQ fluids. In two weeks after her injury she no longer needed her bladder expressed but was constantly leaking urine with no control or even knowledge that she was doing it.

Today she has full control over her bladder and uses the litter box as if nothing ever happened. Her tail has been amputated so she no longer needs to fear the thing that's "following" her. However, she's not using the litter box for defecating, she's been doing it in her cat bed. She's no longer friends with her other cat buddy and is picked on and risks further damaging herself if they continue to fight. No one is sure whether the inappropriate elimination is because she has no control or if it's a behaviour issue. With only 10 days left before they travel by car to the east coast of the US, Allie is running out of time to heal. They have called every rescue shelter in the city and can only get her on a waiting list. I'm trying desperately to find Allie a place to convalesce. She's very sweet and quite pretty. She may heal with more time and be a normal kitty...she may not. Her euthanasia costs would be covered by her owners who will stay in touch with me when they return home.

Please pass this on to anyone you can think of who could care for a special needs cat. They can email me.

Press Release for a Winnipeg Event, (it was emailed to me) [Mar. 7th, 2007|10:34 pm]

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Vault Gallery to hold art opening entitled Epiphany, on INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY, March 8, 2007 at 7p.m. featuring live dance and spoken word performances at 8p.m.

This collaboration of Manitoba Women Artists evokes a 21st Century female renaissance through visual art, dance, video, and spoken word and commemorates International Women's Month. The show runs from March 8, 2007 to April 7, 2007.

The project was initiated by Connie Bart-Hamel whose series Epiphany explores the feminine face of God and reflects her experience of revelation in visual language from a female perspective. Her works incorporate the traditional methods of sewing and hand carving utilized by artisans commissioned by the church. It was after a 5-year journey of creating this body of work, that Bart-Hamel approached Vault Gallery with the idea of collaborating with other female artists to have a show honouring International Women's Month.

The scope of the show has grown to include 15 Manitoba female artists: Connie Bart-Hamel, Brigitte Dion, Sheila Spence, Stephanie Walker, Kate Guth, Daphne Enns, Leona Brown, Sandra Campbell, Gaetanne Sylvester, Angel Calnek, Tracy Peters, Marry Lukeman, Naomi Gerrard, Reba Hanes, and Chandra Mayor.

The work has as much variety in its media as it does in the artists who are participants, each with her own perspective of an epiphany. An installation, paintings, flobs, and found objects are just some of the artists' modes of expression. The visual, spoken word and dance forms give "voice" to the female perspective that addresses ancient legends, values, and the routine of domestic life.

The public is invited to the opening on March 8, 2007 at 7p.m. where the artists will be in attendance. Please come and help celebrate this unique blending of artistic expression to commemorate International Women's Day.

Vault Gallery is pleased to present this exhibition. Located in St. James, at 2181 Portage Ave., the gallery has a community connection that allows different cross-sections of society to enjoy and experience art in all its many forms.

I love marketing. (Tax Software Rant/Buyer Beware) [Jan. 8th, 2007|12:29 pm]
And yes, that is sarcasm.

I like to use Taxwiz to do my taxes every year. (For those of you who are wondering why im thinking abotu taxes this early in teh year, ask my sister abotu my move-out spreadsheet. Im slightly anal about budgets).

Taxwiz was bought by Quicktax a few years ago.

Quicktax says its the most popular software, but every review on the internet says that Taxwiz is cheaper (by at least $10, usually more than that), AND its more user-friendly than Quicktax, though their backend has been described as "nearly identical". Of course, you can import your taxwiz file itno quicktax, but the reverse isnt guaranteed.

On the quicktax website, they advertise "we will no longer be offering taxwiz for download through teh web, but we WILL offer you this discount if you buy QUICKTAX and our sponsored partner Norton."

I emailed taxwiz to ensure that they would still be offering their product, and was assured that it would be in major stores next week. That was a few weeks ago, and today i walked into Staples to see Quicktax right in teh middle of the store, plain for all to see.

Of course, Taxwiz wasn't anywhere in sight. I asked one of the staff working, and was informed that it would be in next week.

*sigh* Of course ti will.

But the makers of both products would NEVER release their cheaper, easier to use software first, because then more people would buy Quicktax instead of Taxwiz.

That said, Im still buying the cheapie Taxwiz. It does combined returns for peeps with spouses, lets you transfer school credits for students, maximizes your return, includes charity info, RRSP's....so I fail to see what else Quicktax could really offer.

Christmas Lights are Pretty. :) [Jan. 3rd, 2007|08:10 pm]
I had googled "Winnipeg Christmas LIghts" as I was hoping to find out where exactly on Henderson Highway the lighted bay full of christmas lights was that my parents' always drove down every year, but instead, on the second page of google, I found "The Christmas Light Run".

It's an 1/8 scale replica minitrain that each christmas will take you on a 7 minute tour of a magical forest-land filled with twinkling christmas lights. For $2, it's quite pretty, and they have some walking trails as well for before/after the ride.

I highly recommend it to anyone who likes pretty christmas lights, though the xmas ride will only be on til Jan 7 (this saturday).

For more info, heres a link to a description of the event, which has a link to their (horriblly designed) official website.

Just a note: the peeps who old it are ancient, hence the sucky website, but the pics dont do it any justice. THe place is BEAUTIFUL at night.

Hope some of you go! (It's just at the edge of assiniboine park at Roblin)

P.S. Pics to come soon.
